All Malaysians and expats working in Malaysia know that we have amongst the most public holidays of any nation in the world. In part, this is in appreciation to the diverse cultures and religions present in our country — Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Wesak, Christmas, and so many more. More localised holidays are also present celebrate the birthdays of sultans from each respective state. Today, a new national holiday has been declared on the 30th of July in conjuction with the coronation of a new sultan.
July 30th Declared a New National Public Holiday
The Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Ismail Bakar recently announced that July 30th, which is the last Tuesday of July, has been declared a national public holiday in conjunction with the coronation of Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
According to MalaysiaKini, Ismail also said that the additional public holiday was made based on Section 8 of the Public Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369) for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
He added, however, that Sabah and Sarawak may take their respective lawful actions according to their own state constitutions.
